We know there’s a lot of questions and we know not everyone has experience skateboarding or is a beginner isn’t sure where to start. Hopefully this answers a lot of common questions. If this doesn’t answer your questions, please email us at thesurfdaytoncompany@gmail.com

Q: How are Surf Dayton Skate Decks made?
A: They are hand made and shaped all by us locally in Dayton Ohio from start to finish. We are doing a separate blog post on this very subject with step by step process.

Q: Do you sell complete boards?
A: We only want to sell products we print or produce ourselves that we can be proud of and guarantee quality and only offer the decks. It also gives the customer the option to customize their deck with wheels and trucks that they want and in the colors they want.

Q: What are things to look for in a board for beginners?
A: The Longboard Cruiser and The Nuke are the most beginner friendly because of their longer shape and wide shape. Things to look for really is just shape and length to give the most balance. Also when shopping for trucks and wheels, the wider the trucks, the more stable it will be and the fatter the wheels, the easier it will go over cracks and bumps on the pavement. However, it also sacrifices carving radius.

Q: Where should I get my trucks and wheels?
A: There’s several online sources but always good to buy local at your local skate shop. Ask questions and what size and style trucks and wheels that will work best for your deck shape/size. We’ve found several inexpensive options on amazon that will work to get for beginners to get started. But any trucks and wheels will work!

Q: What trucks or set up should I get?
A: We love the Waterborne Surf Adapter and use for all our personal boards to give the feeling of surfing on land and carving. The kit can be added to any board set up. It’s the closest set up to surfing that we’ve ever come across. This can also be achieved by other trucks like the Carver or Sector9 Sidewinder trucks. When buying trucks, look at the width for your board. If you’re looking at the longboard, go for wider trucks like 9” wide for speed and stability, but for more smaller cruisers you want maybe narrower trucks around 7” for more carving. It really is personal preference though.

Q: How do you prevent “wheel bite” and prevent my wheels from hitting the bottom of the deck when turning?
A: We don’t add wheel cut outs because all our boards are hand shaped and wheel cuts to keep consistent between cutouts would need to be CNC’d. They can be sanded with a Dremel but we want consistency. However the easiest way to prevent wheel bite that we recommend is to add RISERS to your trucks. Most truck sets come with risers and longer bolts. It does raise the deck higher but also allows for easier carving and turning. You can also have smaller wheel diameter as well.

Q: Do you ship or can we pick up locally?
A: Yes all our decks are shipped UPS ground unless you use the discount code: PICKUP20 and shipping will be waived and you can pick up your order from us at 21 N. Beckel st. Suite 300B Dayton OH 45403. Please email or call with a date/time you want to pick up and we will schedule a pick up.

Q: How long should a deck last?
A: We use coats of polyurethane to protect the deck and if the deck is stored and treated well, it should last for years. Some good practices is don’t leave outside when not in use to protect from heat and then. Keep it dry and away from rain and water. If you see the rails having some wear, you can always reapply polyurethene or epoxy to keep the rails good. Over time from constant vibrations, the plys of wood can start splitting just like any deck. You can always clean out, add more glue and clamp in the damaged area to repair it. Taking good care of your deck, will prolong its life.

Q: Do you offer a warranty?
A: We will guarantee your deck from failure to defects in manufacturing. However if treated poorly or damage from user usage, we can not offer any warranty. We will not offer any return or exchange after its first use.

Q: Do we do custom decks?
A: No, right now we have a line of decks and to keep consistent stock, we are only offering from our line of decks. We will always take suggestions on what you want to see in the future.

Q: How is the deck gripped?
A: All our boards come already with medium grip using a product called Lucid Grip that goes on clear to give a nice grip finish but still show off the wood grain and paint colors. This product can always be reapplied If needed.
